Dentist
What they do
Dentists are healthcare professionals who diagnose, prevent, and treat diseases and conditions of the mouth, teeth, and gums. They play a critical role in supporting overall physical health by maintaining oral hygiene, alleviating pain, and spotting early warning signs of systemic diseases like oral cancer or diabetes.
Work environment
Dentists spend their days operating in sterile, well-lit operatories alongside tight-knit teams of hygienists and assistants, performing precise, hands-on clinical procedures.
How to become one
To become a licensed dentist, you need a bachelorโs degree, a 4-year dental degree (DDS or DMD) from an accredited program, and a passing score on the INBDE written exam and a clinical assessment. State-specific licenses also require passing a jurisprudence exam and background checks.
